Ryanair cancels routes to Fuerteventura, leaving 5,000 people without flights
The low cost airline Ryanair has decided to stop operating in Fuerteventura from 31 January 2009, which has left 5,000 people who had booked airline tickets without your winter vacation.
Ryanair justifies its decision by the breach of an agreement with a group of local businessmen, the Economic Interest Group Promoting Tourism Development Fuerteventura-to promote the island as a tourist destination.
The decision marks the end of 23 weekly services in nine international routes to Fuerteventura from 31 January, after-as-Ryanair have made efforts to encourage the IEA to enforce the agreement they had signed.
The company refunded the amount of the ticket, but refuses to compensate passengers for hire or accommodation bookings they have made, even those that have been made through its own website.
Ryanair to shut down services to and from Fuerteventura are Birmingham (three flights per week), Bremen (two), Dublin (twice), Düsseldorf (one), East Midlands (three), Frankfurt (twice), Liverpool (three), London (three) and Shannon (one). Ryanair has stated that since he began flying in Fuerteventura in 2006 the annual number of passengers has increased by over 100 from about 2,000 travelers to over 250,000.
